Belinda Stephenson`s moody abstracts play with subtle gradation of overlapping colour, subtle texture and carefully balanced composition. She is keen that the viewer is not alienated by her abstract art. She requests that the audience simply views and responds to the work in a personal way, suggesting feelings and ideas the work evokes to them.
Belinda starts by dividing the canvas into distinct areas for her chosen basic overall composition. Use of colour, texture and drawing into her work is playful and spontaneous. The painting process is a journey where she has no definite outcome in mind. She responds to each layer with limited colour while adding or taking away from the original layout. Stencils are sometimes incorporated in the painting process. The canvas or board is worked on by frequently turning the painting upside-down or on its side until a balanced composition and form is realised.
